2024 June 2: Lynn Headwaters

It rained!

Well, I suppose a bit more detail is warranted.  Undeterred by rainfall warnings, 10 Loopers gathered at Kilmer Park at the top of Lynn Valley Road.  Under a steady rain and following this month’s leaders Diane and Fred, the group proceeded down to Lynn Creek and then took the trail north along the west side of the creek.  Shortly along the way we stopped for the starting selfie, taken minus photographer since it was too wet to stage the camera for the normal group shot.  At this point one of the group forgot her walking pole, only discovered after we were too far along to turn back.  We proceeded, fingers crossed that the pole would be there on our return.

At the entrance to Lynn Headwaters Park we crossed the bridge over to the East side of the creek.  There was an impressive flow of water over the old dam just above the bridge.  After crossing we turned briefly south to reach the start of the upper trail, which climbed steadily as we turned back north.  As we climbed it became quite misty.

We had a brief snack break in the rain, which had let up slightly by that point, before descending to creek level via a series of wooden steps,  We then turned south and followed the creek back down to the bridge we had previously crossed.

We re-crossed the creek and took the opportunity for a short, sheltered rest break before retracing our route back to the starting point.  Several of us passed by the location of the missing pole without noticing it, but one eagle-eyed Looper (Alan) did see it and returned it to its owner.

Afters were at GoodCo on Dollarton Highway, where we were joined by three Loopers who had been unable to do the hike.  There was some discussion as to where this hike ranked in terms of the wettest Looper outings of all time.  Your faithful scribe believes it likely ranks in the top 3.  First of note to me was in our first year, July 6, 2014 (Port Coquitlam to Pitt River).  After that outing I came down with pneumonia!  The second, memorable to many Loopers, was November 1, 2015 (Semiahoo to the Peace Arch).  That one featured biting cold and horizontal rain along the White Rock shore, and the first deployment of the infamous blue poncho.

Readers are encouraged to share their choices of the wettest walks in the comments section.

Thanks again to this month’s leaders Diane and Fred.

Great summation of a fun walk (despite deluge), and good historical tie-in.

Captioning, as usual, was superb. Thx Jon
