2025 October 5: Pacific Spirit Park

On a crisp and sunny morning, this month’s gathering point was at the corner of 16th Avenue and Imperial Drive.  10 loopers posed for the starting selfie at the Huckleberry trailhead before plunging into the woods.  We were joined very shortly by a couple of stragglers.

Guided by our leader Gordon, we took a meandering route through the southern part of Pacific Spirit Park.  We followed Huckleberry trail to Hemlock trail and continued to the west.  Upon meeting Salish trail we turned northward back towards 16th Avenue.   At the junction with Sword Fern trail we turned back south and followed Sword Fern down to Imperial trail, one of the main east/west trails through the park.  Partway along Sword Fern Jon pointed out a spot where a bench had once stood, been replaced and then mysteriously removed again.

We then headed back east along Imperial until we reached the southern section of Salish trail, where we turned south.  Heading south and east we reached a sunny clearing near the southeast corner of the park.  Taking advantage of the clearing, we stopped for a snack/lunch break.

Once refreshed, we headed up Clinton trail taking us north and further east.  This trail has the distinction of having the one significant hill in this corner of the park.  At the top of the hill we turned north on another section of Hemlock trail.  Taking a right turn onto Sasamat trail we followed it back to Imperial trail, where we crossed Imperial Drive and followed Top trail to the east.

Top trail emerged at Crown Street (starting point for a previous outing).  A brief walk up Crown Street brought us to the Camosun Trail.  This trail passes through the Camosun Bog on a wooden walkway that encircles bog.  After leaving the bog and climbing a short flight of steps, it was a short hike back to the starting point.

Afters were enjoyed at the Westward Ho Pub in the UBC Golf Clubhouse.
